Theory@Elettra: Home Page
Theory@Elettra is the theory group of the Elettra synchrotron radiation laboratory. The group activities are funded by the CNR-INFM DEMOCRITOS National Simulation Center and supported by Sincrotrone Trieste and by Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA).
ThE group develops and applies various quantum-mechanical techniques for the numerical simulation of matter at the nanoscale. Its mission includes
- to develop computational spectroscopies and microscopies
- to support the experimental activity performed in the campus by local scientists as well as by external beamline users
- to foster the collaboration between users and external theorists
ThE group participates in the Quantum ESPRESSO project, an integrated suite of computer codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling at the nanoscale.

Observation and theory get on best when they are mixed together, both helping one another in the pursuit of truth. It is a good rule not to put overmuch confidence in a theory until it has been confirmed by observation. I hope I shall not shock the experimental physicists too much if I add that it is also a good rule not to put overmuch confidence in the observational results until they have been confirmed by theory.
Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882-1944)
